This retrospective study included 114 patients who had undergone screening colonoscopies before subsequent bariatric or metabolic surgery. To identify the independent determinants of CRA/CRC, multivariate analyses were applied to the characteristics deemed significant or nearly significant in the initial univariate analyses.
In 20 of the 114 patients (17.5%), the colonoscopy detected abnormal findings, prompting the need for a biopsy or polypectomy, and 13 patients (11.4%) were found to have CRA. A significant 26% of the 56-year-old patients (n=3) presented with a 10mm CRA in diameter. A multivariate analysis indicated that age and male gender were substantial predictors for CRA/CRC, which was found in 462% of male patients at the age of 46.
Our study suggests a potential association between older age, male sex, and CRA/CRC risk in obese Japanese patients considering bariatric/metabolic surgery; hence, preoperative colonoscopy is recommended for these high-risk individuals.
